Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a spoon. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the blow of this disaster.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to work. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so terrible that you can't help but burst out chuckling. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer level of chaos and just throws its hands up, opting for amusement as a coping strategy.
But then, you realize that it's not really funny. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you experienced morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
In the end, you are left with a sense of confusion. You wonder about the purpose of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
A Disaster of Epic Proportions
The tsunami struck without warning, destroying entire cities in its wake. Buildings crumbled like house of cards, and the screams that followed was deafening. Thousands were buried beneath rubble, their fate unknown. The scale of the disaster was unprecedented, leaving survivors to face a future forever scarred.
Rescue teams sprang into action, struggling against time and hazardous conditions to locate those still missing. The nations watched in horror as the full devastating power of the disaster became apparent, offering prayers to the afflicted population.
Worst Day Ever
It all started with the case of website morning hair. I couldn't do it to look presentable. As I was running out the door, I fell and dropped my lunch all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was totally late for work.
I sweating. My {boss|teacher|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day was absolutely horrendous. Everything. I get anything done.
By the time I reached my destination, I was exhausted. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.
Things Went From Bad to Absolutely Terrible
It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
